The Islamic belief is the only correct solution to Man's fundamental problem

Part 9 - The miracle of the Quran

A man's style of speaking and writing can be copied by another man. We can say that it is a law of nature that if a man was to study the style of another man, he would be able, if he needed to, to imitate that style.

Examples of this happening in every day life include:

  • Presidents, prime ministers, monarchs and politicians seldom write their own speaches; rather, they have teams of professional speach-writers who will write speaches in a consistent and uniform manner. For example, in the UK, the Queen's speech on Christmas Day, or at the opening of Parliament have had the same styles for a number of years, despite the fact that different people over the years have written them.

  • In the literary world, every newspaper and magazine has a unique "house style" for the articles they publish, and all the authors comply with that. This practice ensures a consistent style throughout a publication, and consistency over time.

  • A comedian may imitate the style of speaking of a famous person.

  • An impersonator may assume the persona of another person.

The Quran claims to be a book of verses written in a style that man cannot imitate. It is not a question of it being beautiful or that it contains wisdom, it is merely a question of whether a man can write in the same style.

The author of the Quran says:

"Say: 'If all mankind and the jinn would come together to produce the like of the Quran, they could not produce its like even though they exerted all and their strength in aiding one another.'"
[TMQ Surah al-Isra 17:88]

and then:

"Or do they say that he (Muhammed) has invented it?
Say to them, 'Bring 10 invented surahs like it, and call for help on whomever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful'"

[TMQ Surah Hood 11:13]

and then:

"And if you all are in doubt about what I have revealed to My servant,
bring a single surah like it, and call your witnesses besides Allah if you are truthful."
[TMQ Surah al-Baqarah 2:23]

The whole of Islam is based on this pretty simple, easy-to-understand challenge. It is possible to copy the style of a man's writing. But the Quran is not from man because it is impossible for man to write in the same style.

In Arabia, the Arabs were experts in poetry and they used to compete with each other in this. The Quran was revealed to them and it baffled them by its beauty and incomparable language. None of the Arabs at that time nor any of the Arabs in the 1400 or so years since then has been able to produce anything similar or comparable to it. This is why the majority of the Arab people easily embraced Islam after witnessing the miracle of the Quran.

The early Muslims understood the political dimension of Islam.

'Uthman ibn Affan (ra) said: "Allah might influence the people to abide by the rules of Islam by the Sultan more than by the influence of the Quran."
